Retirement Benefits for Deputy President in Kenya

The Retirement Benefits (Deputy President and Designated State Officers) Act states the retirement benefits for a Deputy President in Kenya. The benefits also apply to a retired Vice President.

A retired Deputy President or retired Vice-President shall, during their lifetime, receive the following benefits–

  • a monthly pension equal to eighty per cent of the monthly salary of the Deputy President or the last monthly salary of a retired Vice-President while in office;
  • a lump sum payment on retirement, calculated as a sum equal to one year’s salary paid for each term served in office;
  • two saloon vehicles with an engine capacity not exceeding 2000 cc, which shall be replaceable once every four years;
  • one four-wheel drive vehicle with an engine capacity not exceeding 3000cc, which shall be replaceable once every four years;
  • a fuel allowance equal to fifteen per cent of the current monthly salary of the office holder;
  • full medical and hospital cover, providing for local and overseas treatment, with a reputable insurance company for the Deputy President or retired Vice-President and their spouse;
  • the additional benefits set out in the Third Schedule of the Retirement Benefits (Deputy President and Designated State Officers) Act are as follows–
    • two drivers;
    • one personal assistant;
    • one accountant;
    • one secretary;
    • two housekeepers;
    • two senior support staff;
    • two cooks;
    • two gardeners;
    • two cleaners;
    • armed security guards availed on request by the Deputy President or retired Vice-President;
    • diplomatic passports for the Deputy President or retired Vice-President and their spouse;
    • office and office equipment;
    • maintenance expenses for the vehicles provided according to the Retirement Benefits (Deputy President and Designated State Officers) Act;
    • access to the V.I.P. Lounge II at all airports within Kenya.
